Yesterday I wrote a post expressing my disappointment at what I thought was the first newsletter from 38 Studios. kieron, Lead Community Manager at 38 Studios stopped by on the forums and advised the following.

The message that went out yesterday was sent as a thank you to those who signed up early for the newsletter. The first issue of The Well should be released before the end of the year and include much more content than yesterday’s greeting.

I hope this will allay some of your concerns.

Thanks kieron for clarifying things.

In my mind this is still a mistake since it was not clearly communicated in the email that was sent out. In all honesty it’s the first mistake I have seen the company make and really a minor one in the big scheme of things so my reaction was over the top and for that I apologize. When the game releases a year from now no one will care about any of this.

In my defense I guess I was still infatuated with the bloom of 38 Studios and now the bloom is gone. Does that mean the company is doomed or will fail or that I won’t continue to report and cheer for 38 Studios? Heck no. It just means the company is like any other company and it will make mistakes as we all do. What I hope will be different is that they learn from their mistakes and take honest feedback from their fans. That is a sign of a great company.

Curt Schilling gave a presentation on Leadership in the Game Space back in 2008 for the International Game Developers Leadership Forum and he talked about how as a leader in a company you want your people to tell you when you’re off track. He advised as a leader to go in and pitch a crazy off the wall idea to your team and if no one challenges you on it you got some big problems. That’s all I am doing is voicing my concern. Does not mean I will always be right or that 38 Studios will even respond but I hope they at least appreciate mine as well as all fans honest feedback and I have a feeling they do.

Yup you heard right! Stop by the Reckoning booth (2257) at the New York Comic Com Oct 8th to 10th and sign up for the Reckoning newsletter to be entered into a draw to win one of 10 daggers based on the artwork from Reckoning! Dagger may or may not look like the one shown below. :) Curt Schilling and Todd McFarlane will be there as well as Charles “kieron” Dane who is the new Lead Community Manager at 38 Studios. Charles has let us know more information will be revealed about the game during the event.

With the announcement that Charles “kieron” Dane is the new Lead Community Manager at 38 Studios it got me wondering just who he is and what his background is? A quick check of the 38 Studios and Big Huge Games web sites came up with nothing for Charles so I decided to put my leet Googling skills to work and low and behold I was able to find out some interesting information.

It appears that this is not the first time Charles has been in this position; he was actually the Community Relations Manager for Aion and prior to that he was the Community Manager for CCP and Eve Online. Now of course this is not official so I could be wrong, it certainly would not be the first or last time. That said I don’t think I am and hiring someone with previous experience like this is yet another good move by 38 Studios who continues to put together a team of proven performers and it looks like kieron is a big mmo gamer!

ORZ: Why did you decide to work in the gaming industry?

kieron: To be honest, I never thought about the gaming industry as a career until the internal liaison for the Ultima Online Event Moderator program left for another opportunity. While I was in discussion with the team about the possibility of applying for his position, I was given an opportunity to interview for the EVE Community Manager position. It still amazes me that a hobby has turned into a career.

ORZ: How did you end up working with NCsoft?

kieron: After parting ways with CCP, I enjoyed a short vacation. Later, I saw the Community Relations Manager position for Aion was open and I applied. After a number of interviews and the normal HR process, I received an offer to join the team.

It’s my honor to help introduce Charles “kieron” Dane, the new Lead Community Manager at 38 Studios. As part of his offical duties he will be hanging out on our forums and doing his best to help answer any questions and being a part of the community here at 38 Gamers. Greetings! My name is Charles ‘kieron’ Dane and I am the new Lead Community Manager at 38 Studios. As one of the primary points of contact for the Amalur community, one of my responsibilities is to interact with the fans of 38 Studios and our games, such as 38 Gamers.

I’ve had my eye on this site since early in the year and have watched it grow into perhaps the most informative news source for anything related to 38 Studios. That’s a great service to the Amalur community and one I look forward to supporting for many years to come.

I can’t go into detail about Reckoning, Copernicus or Amalur at the present, and no, you can’t have my stuff, but I will certainly answer questions or forward comments as I am able.

Looking forward to a long and fun relationship with the community.

Cheers!kieron
Lead Community Manager,
38 Studios
